Child Welfare - Where's the Money Going?

November 1, 2020 | Roslyn Chambers

Any who has been involved in the provincial child protection/child welfare system would be aware of the financial challenges of keeping children or getting them back home.

When a child is apprehended and put in the care of the province, the parent(s) loses all financial assistance such as Child Tax Benefits, daycare subsidies, housing benefits and the income assistance family portion to name a few examples.

Whether the parent has the child in their care or attempting to have the child return, housing and other household expenses remain the same. So financial abilities become significant barriers during this.

Of note is that the reinstatement of the lost child related benefits are not as quick as the termination.

So where is the money going?
